What Bill Donohue does not understand is the entire concept behind Roman, and if he wasn’t so close-minded, perhaps he would’ve taken the time to explore it.
Roman Zolanski is supposed to be a closeted gay boy, hiding his homosexuality from his prim, proper, conservative mother, Martha. In the performance, Martha brings a member of the clergy to the house to try to get the “devil” out of Roman- the devil being his homosexuality, which obviously cannot be removed.
In Roman Holiday, Martha is trying to send Roman away, to a bible camp or religious retreat, to “cure” him of his homosexuality.
Nicki consistently advocates for the LGBT community and assures her support for them. She is making a point: religion, in this case Catholicism, oppresses its followers, punishing them for things that are beyond their control; no one chooses who they are attracted to. Nature does. And for Bill Donohue to come out and suggest that Nicki may be possessed - just for bringing some hypocrisy to the table - well, that’s what’s wrong with our society.
